Beta HCG TOTAL Test

Serum Beta HCG test is a blood test which detects level of hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) in blood. This hormone is produced at time of pregnancy so this test is useful as a pregnancy confirmation test. This hormone can be detected both in blood and urine. It is produced by placenta to maintain the corpus luteum during pregnancy. It has 2 subunits alpha & beta, of which beta subunit is unique and can be measured in plasma & urine.

Why is Beta HCG blood test prescribed?

Your health care provider may advise you this test in certain conditions-

High level may be seen in

• Normal pregnancy
• Gestational Trophoblastic disease
• Germ cell tumours, choriocarcinoma
• Hydatiform mole

Low level may be seen in

• Threatened abortion
• Ecotopia preganancy

What are components of Beta HCG test?

Quantitative-it tells you the amount of HCG present in blood sample. Quantitative test is used to monitor response to treatment and to detect certain other conditions. Its value is reported in milli-international units per millilitre(mIU/ml).
