Serum Beta HCG test, also called the BHCG test, is a blood test which detects the level of hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the blood. This hormone is produced at the time of pregnancy, so this test is useful as a pregnancy confirmation test. This hormone can be detected both in blood and urine. It is produced by the placenta to maintain the corpus luteum during pregnancy. It has 2 subunits, alpha & beta, of which the beta subunit is unique and can be measured in plasma & urine.
Your health care provider may advise you to undergo this BHCG test in certain conditions-
High level hormone
Low level hormone
Quantitative test tells you the amount of HCG present in the blood sample. Quantitative test is used to monitor response to treatment and to detect certain other conditions. Its value is reported in milli-international units per millilitre(mIU/ml).
