Pap Smear Test Overview

A pap smear test also called a pap test is used to diagnose cervical cancer. This test can be ordered by doctors based on symptoms reported by the patient or as a preventative measure against cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer and the second most fatal type of cancer in the country.

This test is performed by collecting cell samples from the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus. The samples are tested in the labs for abnormal growth, which could indicate cancer. The average pap smear test cost can range between ₹500 and ₹550.

When is a Pap Smear Test prescribed?

Women between the ages of 21 to 65 are recommended to get a pap smear test every three years to screen for cervical cancer. It is also recommended if you are exhibiting symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal bleeding after sex
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Periods that are heavier and longer than usual

Pap Smear Test Components

A pap smear test is based on sample collection from a patient’s cervix. The test components are mainly the apparatus that is used during the sample collection process.

How Pap Smear Test Is Done

The patient is required to lie down on the examination table with their legs wide apart and placed on stirrups. Doctors use a speculum, which is inserted into the vagina to keep the vaginal walls from contracting and also to get access to the cervix.

Once it is in place, doctors go ahead with sample collection using a spatula or a cytobrush. They scrape the cervix to extract cells that are to be retrieved, preserved, and sent to be tested for abnormal growth.

What Does Pap Smear Results Mean?

There are three possible results from a pap smear test, let’s review each.

Negative: Negative test report signifies that there are no abnormalities in the sample tested. Negative results are also referred to as normal pap smear results.

Positive: A positive pap smear test doesn’t automatically mean cervical cancer. There can be minor changes to a patient’s cervical cells that can go away on their own. In such cases, it is important to discuss the test reports with a doctor for further diagnosis.

Unclear: Unclear test results mean that the cells extracted from the patient’s cervix were not enough, clumped together, or hidden in mucus. In most cases, doctors will recommend you to go through the test again in 2 to 4 months.
