HLA - B27 Test Overview

The HLA B27 test is used to test for a protein found on the surface of white blood cells known as human leukocyte antigen. This blood test is a genetic test used to determine whether a patient has a genetic predisposition for autoimmune diseases or not. The HLA B27 test is not a routine test.

It is prescribed when doctors suspect certain symptoms in patients. Based on the results of this test, doctors can determine the patient’s risk of certain types of arthritis or spondylitis. If the patient has existing symptoms of the conditions listed above, the HLA B27 test can be used to diagnose the conditions.

Why Is A HLA - B27 Test Prescribed?

Doctors prescribe the HLA B27 test based on the patient's symptoms. Some of the symptoms that can warrant this blood test include joint inflammation, eye inflammation, chronic back pain, and swelling in fingers and toes.

Based on the results of the HLA B27 test, doctors can diagnose conditions like arthritis or spondylitis, depending on the symptoms. This test is also prescribed to patients who are getting an organ transplant or bone marrow transplant to see if they match the donated tissue.

Components of An HLA - B27 Test

The HLA B27 test reports are expressed as either positive or negative based on whether the antigens being tested for are present in the patient’s body or not. There is no HLA B27 blood test normal range as the presence of this antigen increases a patient’s risk for several autoimmune conditions. Based on the test reports doctors can prescribe further tests such as Rheumatoid Factor test, x-rays, C-reactive protein test, or anti-cyclic citrullinated test. In the absence of symptoms, if this test is prescribed a positive test result may still not mean an increased risk of autoimmune conditions.

Procedure And Prerequisites

As a blood test, the procedure to administer this test involves drawing blood from the veins in the arm of the patient and sending it for testing.
