Follicle Stimulating Hormone Test (FSH test)

The follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH blood test measures the level of FSH in blood. FSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland in men and women and plays an essential role in reproduction.

What are the Components of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) tests?

The main component checked by this test is a Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH blood test) which is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland in a pulsatile manner. This hormone is necessary for normal pubertal development and is responsible for fertility in both men and women.

Procedure and prerequisite

Blood sample is taken from the vein. In a female patient, the sample is collected at specific times during her menstrual cycle. No need to fast. Sometimes urine sample is also collected to check the FSH.

Basal level in premenopausal women depends on age, smoking history, length, and menstrual cycle regularity.

Follicle stimulating hormone is a gonadotropic hormone secreted by pituitary. Gland and responsible for developmental and reproductive processes of the body. Its diagnostic utility is for gonadal dysfunction and infertility work up. It is used as a medication in ovulation induction/ovarian hyperstimulation as part of IVF.
