What are natriuretic peptide tests (BNP, NT-proBNP)?

The heart produces hormones called natriuretic peptides. These hormones are available in two forms brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) (BNP). Usually, the bloodstream only contains trace amounts of these two. In conditions like heart failure and cardiac problems, when too much fluid builds up in the blood vessels, these hormones are released into the bloodstream in reaction. BNP, the active hormone, promotes the elimination of salt and water from the blood. The BNP test is also written as NT-proB-type Natriuretic Peptide Test, brain natriuretic peptide, and B-type natriuretic peptide. This NT-proBNP test measures the value of blood levels of BNP or NT-proBNP. The nt pro bnp test shows increased value if the heart cannot pump the blood properly. The BNP test is used to detect or diagnose heart failure.

What are the components of the natriuretic peptide test?

The NT- proBNP Blood test is immediately recommended when the doctors see one of the following symptoms

Shortness of breath
Fatigue
Swelling in the ankles and feet
Signs of cardiac failure in the emergency room

Sometimes the BNP test is usually recommended along with other tests like complete blood count to detect anemia or other blood disorders.
Other diagnostic tests like a stress test, chest x-ray, and ECG are recommended with these tests.
Sometimes it is recommended along with the metabolic panel

What is the usual range of natriuretic peptides?

Greater than 400 pg/mL: abnormal [1]
Less than 100 pg/ml: Normal [1]
Between 100 to 400 pg/ml: Needs evaluation[1]
Higher values are indicative of heart failure
