Anti-Thyroid Antibody Panel Test Overview

Doctors use an anti thyroid antibody panel test to check for antibodies in your blood that could be indicative of autoimmune thyroid disorders. The two antibodies that are tested in an anti thyroid antibody panel test are anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (TG).

These antibodies are created by the immune system due to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto thyroiditis or Grave’s disease. This test can be used to successfully diagnose autoimmune conditions and accordingly offer management and treatment options for patients.

This panel test includes two individual blood tests the results of which are reported individually. The results of the anti thyroid antibody panel test can be used to determine thyroid health and even rule out the possibility of immune system involvement in thyroid disorders.

When is Anti-Thyroid Antibody Panel Test Prescribed?

The anti thyroid antibody panel is prescribed by doctors when they suspect autoimmune conditions to be a contributing factor for thyroid disorders in patients. The anti thyroid antibodies panel is also prescribed to pregnant women to screen the mother and fetus for any health problems. In some cases, the anti thyroid antibodies panel may be prescribed together with other relevant thyroid tests such as TSH, T3, T4, and anti-thyroid peroxidase test.

Components of An Anti-Thyroid Antibody Panel Test

The anti thyroid antibody panel test has two individual components namely anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (TG). The two components are tested individually and have separate results.

For the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antithyroid antibody panel, the results are expressed as negative or positive. Negative meaning no antibodies were found in the body and positive meaninig antibodies present in the blood. The presence of TPO antibodies in your system could mean you are affected by an autoimmune condition known as Hashimoto thyroiditis.

For the anti thyroglobulin (TG) antithyroid antibody panel, the results are expressed as the level of antibodies found in your system. The normal level of anti thyroglobulin antibodies is less than 10 IU/mL. If your test results are higher than the normal levels, it could indicate the risk of autoimmune conditions like Grave’s disease.

Procedure and Prerequisites

The antithyroid antibodies blood test is performed by drawing blood from the veins of the patient and being sent for testing. There are no prerequisites patients need to follow before going through with the anti thyroid antibody panel test. Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin from the B-complex group. It can interfere with immunoassay tests. To mitigate potential interference, patients taking biotin doses greater than 5,000 mcg should wait at least 8 hours after their last biotin administration before having a sample taken.
