Follicle Stimulating Hormone Test (FSH test)

The follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH blood test measures the level of FSH in the blood. FSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland in men and women and plays an essential role in reproduction. An FSH test is commonly used to assess fertility in both men and women, identify reproductive problems, and check ovarian function. In women, FSH levels can indicate whether they are nearing menopause, while in men, the test helps evaluate sperm production and testicular health.

Why is the Follicle Stimulating Hormone test prescribed?

The doctor recommends an FSH Test to check the cause of infertility, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea (Missing periods in women), to diagnose any dysfunction of ovaries or testicles, hypothalamic disorder, delayed or early puberty in children, low sperm count, and decreased libido.

Besides, women with PCOS often have hormonal imbalances, and measuring FSH levels can aid in identifying the condition. In most cases, FSH levels are lower because the imbalance interferes with normal ovulation. By assessing these levels, doctors can make a more accurate diagnosis of PCOS and recommend suitable treatment.

What are the Components of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) tests?

The main component doctors usually check in this test is the Follicle-stimulating hormone, which is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland in a pulsatile manner. This hormone is necessary for normal pubertal development and is responsible for fertility in both men and women.

Procedure and Prerequisite

A blood sample is taken from the vein. In a female patient, the sample is collected at specific times during her menstrual cycle. No need to fast. Sometimes a urine sample is also collected to check the FSH.

Follicle stimulating hormone is a gonadotropic hormone secreted by pituitary. Gland and responsible for developmental and reproductive processes of the body.
