CA 72.4 GASTRIC CANCER MARKER

CA 72.4 Gastric Cancer Marker Test (CA 72.4 Test)

The tumor marker ca 72 4 is a blood test that is mainly used to help detect and track specific cancers, particularly gastric (stomach) cancer. People with certain cancers may have higher-than-normal amounts of the protein antigen CA 72-4 in their blood. Since healthy people rarely have high levels of this marker, it can be used as a diagnostic and monitoring tool.

Although it may also be raised in ovarian, colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancers, CA 72-4 is most frequently linked to gastric cancer. It is crucial to remember that this isn’t the only test as a diagnostic technique. A tumor marker glycoprotein called CA 72-4 is elevated in several human adenocarcinomas, including ovarian, breast, colon, and stomach cancer. Additionally, those with lymph node metastases have a much higher positive rate for CA 72-4.  In many immunoassays (such as ELISA and ECLIA) for the detection of different types of cancer, CA 72-4 is utilized as a positive control.

Why is ca 72.4 test is prescribed?

If a patient is showing symptoms of gastric or gynaecological malignancies, the doctor would prescribe the CA 72-4 test. There are different symptoms, including weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, loss of appetite, indigestion, bloating, and others. To track how well patients are responding to treatments like chemotherapy or surgery, doctors also advise this test if the patient has a history of ovarian or stomach cancer. A positive response to treatment is frequently indicated by declining CA 72-4 levels, whereas rising levels over time may signal illness progression or recurrence.

Components of tumor marker ca 72 4

The CA 72-4 test quantifies the blood's level of the CA 72-4 antigen. If the report shows elevated levels, it may indicate the existence of cancer, although normal levels often indicate the absence of substantial tumor activity. While low levels frequently signal successful therapy, high levels of CA 72.4 may indicate ongoing malignancy or recurrence. The CA 72.4 must be read in conjunction with other clinical observations and diagnostic tests, as it is not a test that is specific to cancer.

However, other non-cancerous illnesses, such as liver disease, gastrointestinal tract inflammation, and benign ovarian cysts. As a result, a skilled medical professional must always interpret the results.

Preparation and Prerequisites

There is no special preparation required to take the ca 72.4 test. However, patients need to inform the doctor about their medication or medical history. As part of the test, the doctor may collect a small sample of blood from the arm and send it for testing.
