Estrogen Total Serum Test Overview

Estrogens are a vital part of steroids that are responsible for the development of the reproductive organs in women. As a general part of the body, estrogens play an important role in males and females to check the overall strength of bone and muscle. The estrogen total serum test is conducted to measure the overall estrogen levels and detect abnormal levels or hormonal imbalances. Furthermore, by testing for fetal-placental status, the test aids in tracking the overall course of treatment for menopause or infertility.

There are three types of estrogen tested:

  • Estrone: The weakest of the three, estrone (also known as E1), is primarily produced by the adrenal glands and body fat in both men and women. The only kind of estrogen that women continue to produce after menopause is estrone.

  • Estradiol: The primary estrogen in women of reproductive age who are not pregnant is estradiol, often known as E2. It is mostly produced in the ovaries and aids in the release of an egg during each menstrual cycle, enabling pregnancy.

  • Estriol: Pregnancy causes a rise in the estrogen estriol, commonly known as E3, which is produced by the placenta.

Why is Estrogen Total Serum Test Prescribed?

The Estrogen total serum test can identify a woman's excess or deficiency and aid in the diagnosis of several disorders linked to this imbalance. The test also helps in predicting when a woman will ovulate and in tracking the placenta's and the growing baby's health during pregnancy. To identify a hormone excess in a male and its reason, estrogen testing may be done.

Components of Estrogen Total Serum Test

The overall estrogen level depends on the age and sex of the test taker. It also depends on whether a woman is pregnant or on her menstrual cycle. The normal values indicated and the units used in reference ranges will differ slightly between laboratories.

Numerous metabolic disorders are characterized by elevated or decreased estrogen levels. Because the levels change every day and during a woman's menstrual cycle, care must be taken when interpreting E1, E2, and E3 readings.

Preparation and Perquisites

There is no special preparation required to undergo the test. The clinician would take a blood test and a urine test. For the urine test, you will need to collect it within 24 hours.
