For an individual, a well-functioning kidney is essential because it helps in filtering blood and keeping the body in good condition. However, there are situations when the kidneys don't function as required, and you start facing health issues. If the doctors find any symptoms related to the kidneys, you will be asked to undergo Glomerular Filtration Rate test. The test result helps clinicians to know the overall condition of the kidneys and work on your diet and lifestyle. The Glomerular Filtration Rate test is recommended to detect the early signs of kidney damage and come up with a medication to treat the issue. The value of the GFR test is estimated according to the serum creatinine in the blood test. Other than this, the value is estimated according to the body size and race. An individual facing kidney failure or any other kidney problems must undergo the respective test.

Why is the Glomerular Filtration Rate Test Prescribed?

There could be many reasons for health issues, directly or indirectly connected to the kidneys. The reason behind this test is to check how well the kidneys are performing and filtering the blood. An eGFR test can aid in the diagnosis of kidney-related symptoms such as urine changes, itching, nausea, and vomiting. If the initial checkup indicates improper functioning of the kidneys, then the doctor would suggest the same. It is also recommended to undergo the test if kidney disease develops due to:

  • Family history

  • Urine issues

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

The main reason to perform this test is avoid any further complications in your kidneys, if any complications.

Components of Glomerular Filtration Rate test

A healthy kidney function is measured according to the Glomerular Filtration Rate levels, which should be around 100. If the test result shows 90 or more, the kidneys are still functioning well. However, if the result shows 45 or less, the doctor would recommend further tests. The result of the GFR test is expressed in the form of mL/min/1.73m². It indicates the blood volume filtration happening each minute.

If the result shows below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 for three months or longer indicates chronic renal disease. A GFR of less than 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 indicates renal failure and requires prompt medical treatment.

Procedure and Perquisites of Glomerular Filtration Rate Test

As a part of the Glomerular Filtration Rate test preparation, the clinician would ask you to hold any medication you are taking at the time of the test. The lab technician would take a small quantity of blood for testing purposes. About fasting, you need to check with the clinician to be clear about the same.
