Glucose Random Test Overview

Glucose random tests are used by doctors to check the blood sugar levels in a person’s body at any time. These tests are crucial during the diagnosis process of diabetes, prediabetes, or gestational diabetes. Unlike fasting blood sugar tests, the random sugar test doesn’t require fasting or any other special prerequisites to be followed by patients. Based on the reports of this test, doctors can determine, if patients are diabetic or not. Treatment is then accordingly recommended to patients based on their diabetic status.

Why Is A Glucose Random Test Prescribed?

A glucose random test is prescribed by doctors to determine the blood sugar levels of a patient. This test can be recommended as a general screening test for annual health checkups or ordered due to symptoms presented by patients. In the case of patients with any type of diabetes, these tests are regularly required to keep track of a patient’s blood sugar levels. Here are some of the symptoms that can warrant doctors to prescribe a random sugar test.

●     Increased thirst

●     Increased urinary frequency and urgency

●     Vision problems such as blurred vision

●     Hunger pangs even after eating

●     Weight gain over a short period

●     Unexplained fatigue

●     Loss of sensation or feeling in your hands and feet

●     Delays in the formation of blood clots

It is important to note that though the symptoms mentioned above are closely linked to diabetes, the condition can sometimes be asymptomatic as well.

Components of Glucose Random Test

Glucose random test results are presented as the level of blood sugar in your body. The normal range of blood glucose can range between 70 mg/dL to 140 mg/dL. Test results lower than the normal range can indicate prediabetes if they fall between 100 to 125 mg/dL. Test results beyond 200 mg/dL can indicate the presence of diabetes in patients. This test is often also ordered alongside a fasting blood sugar test in case of abnormal test results. However, the test results of a glucose random test can be considered conclusionary in diagnosing diabetes.

Procedure and Prerequisites

The glucose random test is performed as a general blood test with a blood sample drawn from the veins in the patient's forearm. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for testing. There are no special prerequisites patients need to follow for undergoing a random sugar test.
