HCV Rapid Test Overview

The HCV rapid test, or hepatitis C rapid test, detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to hepatitis C infection. The doctor wants to check for specific proteins called antibodies to see if you have been exposed to Hepatitis C. The test indicates whether your body has ever encountered the virus, but it does not indicate whether you are now infected.

Since hepatitis C can go undiagnosed for years and develop liver damage over time without showing any symptoms, undergoing the HCV test is crucial. Once you get the result, you can avoid facing side effects, including cirrhosis, liver failure, and even liver cancer, which can be avoided with early discovery through appropriate screening.

When is HCV Rapid Test Prescribed?

For different populations and situations, doctors advise HCV testing. Regardless of risk factors, all persons between the ages of 18 and 79 should have a one-time hepatitis C screening. Similarly, due to their increased risk, people born between 1945 and 1965 ought to get screened at least once in their lifetime.

Additionally, the test is frequently recommended as part of pre-operative screening, pregnancy screening, general health examinations, or when blood results show increased liver enzyme levels. Besides, the doctor would also recommend the test in case of symptoms like-

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Dark-colored urine

However, people with Hepatitis C may not show the above symptoms in the early stage. You need to connect with your doctor if you are facing any of the mentioned symptoms to get treatment at the early stage.

Components of HCV Rapid Test

The hepatitis C rapid test checks for the following components-

Hepatitis C Antibody (Anti-HCV)

Detects the presence of antibodies produced by the body in response to Hepatitis C virus infection.

HCV Rapid Positive Note

Indicates that a positive result suggests exposure to the Hepatitis C virus and may require further confirmatory testing.

Procedure and Preparation

The HCV test is a non-invasive process. The process is quite similar to other tests. Before sticking a tiny needle into a vein, a medical practitioner cleans the skin on your arm with an antiseptic solution. Once the blood sample is withdrawn from the vein, it is sent for testing purposes.

This test usually doesn't require any additional preparation or fasting. Nonetheless, you should let your doctor know about any recent possible infection exposure, medications, and medical history.
