Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) Overview

A Non invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) test is a common prenatal test panel used by doctors to assess the risk of conditions like Down syndrome in the fetus. This test cannot diagnose the condition; however, it can bring the risk of Down syndrome, if it exists, to the attention of doctors. NIPT can also be used to determine the date of delivery of the child.

The NIPT test is known as a noninvasive procedure, as it requires doctors to only take a blood sample from the mother. This test doesn’t pose any risk to the fetus and can be used to assess the risk of several congenital disorders.

Why Is Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) Prescribed?

Doctors prescribe an NIPT test as a routine part of prenatal testing for mothers. This test is prescribed between the 10th and the 24th week of pregnancy. It allows doctors to understand the child’s DNA and assess the risk of several prenatal conditions. Here are some of the conditions that are screened using non-invasive prenatal testing.

  • Down syndrome

  • Edward’s syndrome

  • Patau syndrome

  • Turner’s syndrome

  • Klinefelter syndrome

The NIPT test cannot diagnose these conditions; it can only test to assess the risk of these conditions in the fetus. Doctors will order further diagnostic tests to confirm their diagnosis.

Components of Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

The NIPT test uses the mother’s blood sample. However, the test results assess the fetus's congenital disorders risk. This is possible because a small amount of the fetus’s DNA circulates in the mother's blood during pregnancy. This test captures those DNA remnants and tests for abnormalities.

The results of noninvasive prenatal testing are showcased as either low-risk or high-risk based on the condition being screened. The NIPT test is very accurate in screening the risk of Down Syndrome. It should be noted that this test is not mandatory. However, doctors recommend that parents undergo it after the 10th week of pregnancy.

Procedure And Prerequisites

The NIPT test procedure involves drawing blood from the mother's veins and sending it for testing. The sample (10 ml of blood) must be collected in a streak tube, which is available at Aster Ref Lab. Patients may need to fill out a maternal serum screen request form, which is also available from Aster Labs. This is done so doctors have a thorough clinical history of the mother. As a prerequisite, patients are required to submit the USG reports of the pregnancy along with the sample. Check with your local Aster Labs today to learn more about the NIPT test price.
