 Prostate Specific Antigen Test Overview

A PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is a simple blood test advised by the doctor to monitor prostate-related conditions. The prostate specific antigen level may vary depending on the symptoms. Higher-than-normal PSA levels may suggest issues such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, or prostate cancer. If there are any signs of prostate cancer, the doctor usually recommends the same. By identifying abnormalities at an early stage, the PSA test supports timely medical intervention and increases the chances of better treatment.

Why is the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test Prescribed?

There are many cases where people over 50 starts facing the risk of prostate cancer due to various reasons. If your PSA results are not normal, your healthcare provider may suggest close monitoring, which can include repeat PSA tests. For individuals at higher risk of developing prostate cancer, doctors may advise beginning routine PSA testing as early as age 40.

If you are facing urinary problems like frequent urination, weak urine flow, or discomfort, prostate specific antigen is advised. It may also be advised as part of regular screening, particularly for men over 50 or those with a hereditary sign of prostate cancer. In addition, the test is valuable for patients already diagnosed with prostate cancer, as it helps track treatment.

Components of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test

You should be aware that the PSA test cannot distinguish whether elevated PSA levels are due to prostate cancer. If your PSA level is high, it means there is a sign of cancer. However, biopsies carry certain risks, including bleeding at the biopsy site, blood in the urine or semen, infection, and sometimes difficulty with urination. The normal and above-normal level of PSA depends on the age-specific.

  • 40-50 age- Normal level is 0- 0.2.5ng/ml and abnormal level is higher than 2.5

  • 50-60 age- Normal level is 2.5 to 3.5 ng/ml and abnormal is higher than 3.5

  • 60-70 age- Normal level 3.5 to 4.5 ng/ml and above abnormal level is higher than 4.5

Preparation and Perquisites

As a part of preparation for prostate-specific antigen test, you will need to avoid ejaculation or any other sexual encounter 48 hrs before the test. Moreover, you need to inform your doctor about any medication you are taking to avoid any alteration in the test result.

During the procedure, the clinician would draw some blood from the vein, and the sample would be sent to the lab for analysis.
