 Sweat Chloride Analysis Test Overview

The human body regulates salt balance using sweat glands, which further release small amounts of sodium and chloride into the skin. However, when a medical condition is present, the entire process is disrupted, leading to elevated chloride levels in sweat. Doctors prescribe the sweat chloride test, a simple diagnostic tool that measures the overall chloride concentration in sweat.

Chloride enters and exits the body's cells to support water balance and electrical neutrality. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is a protein that facilitates this movement. CTFR regulates chloride and sodium transport across cell membranes.

If an individual starts showing early detection of persistent cough, frequent lung infections, or poor growth, sweat chloride analysis helps to get a better idea.

Why is Sweat Chloride Test Prescribed?

There are different reasons why Sweat Chloride Analysis Test is prescribed. Some of these are-

Suspected Cystic Fibrosis

This test is mostly used to confirm or rule out cystic fibrosis. Sweat from CF patients have higher-than-normal chloride levels because their cells' salt transport is compromised.

Abnormal Newborn Screening

The test may be done for newborns to check for any possibility of cystic fibrosis risk. The diagnosis is then verified by a sweat chloride test.

Persistent Respiratory Problems

It may be recommended that patients with persistent coughing, wheezing, or recurrent lung infections have this test done for additional assessment.

Poor Growth and Digestive Issues

Doctors may also suggest this test in response to symptoms like malnutrition, oily stools, or poor weight gain.

Components of Sweat Chloride Test

When doctors check the result of the sweat chloride test, they check for two essentials-

Sweat Stimulation

A tiny patch of skin, generally the forearm, is treated with a low electrical current and a substance known as pilocarpine. The sweat glands are stimulated to produce perspiration as a result.

Sweat Gathering and Evaluation

The amount of chloride in the sweat is measured in a lab after it has been collected on a particular filter paper or coil.

If the result is negative, then there are low chloride levels and no signs of cystic fibrosis. Similarly, if the result is positive, high chloride levels are present. The doctor would recommend certain medication.

Preparation and Procedure

There is no special preparation needed for the sweat chloride analysis. Moreover, no fasting is required. Usually, the test takes between thirty and sixty minutes to finish. To assure accuracy, the exam may be repeated in some situations, particularly when the results are ambiguous.
