Urea Fluid Test Overview

The Urea Fluid test is conducted to check the overall concentration of urea in bodily fluids, such as ascitic fluid, peritoneal fluid, or other collected bodily fluid samples. When the body breaks down proteins, a waste substance called urea is created. Normally, the kidneys filter it and excrete it through urine.  However, there are situations in which the kidneys fail to filter it.

For patients who show signs of renal malfunction or who have any buildup of fluid in a bodily cavity, doctors advise this test. Additionally, it can assist in determining whether trauma, surgery, or urinary tract issues have caused urine to seep into bodily compartments. Elevated levels may indicate urine contamination, as urea is found at considerably higher concentrations in urine than in blood.

With urea test, doctors can monitor kidney-related issues and offer the right diagnosis or treatment plan for the long-term.

When is Urea Fluid Test Prescribed?

The Urea Fluid test is conducted to measure the average amount of urea nitrogen in your blood or body fluid. Besides, there are other reasons why a urea test is prescribed. Some of these are:

• When fluid builds up in the abdomen or other bodily cavities for no apparent reason.

• To check whether fluid accumulation is being caused by pee leaks.

• To monitor patients receiving peritoneal dialysis.

• The signs of poor kidney function include weariness, cramping in the muscles, edema, or prolonged weakness.

• To monitor chronic conditions impacting kidney function.

Components of Urea Fluid Test

The urea fluid test is conducted to check the overall concentration of urea present in the body fluid sample. The test result helps doctors to assess urinary tract leaks and abnormal fluid accumulation. When the BUN result is normal, it doesn't always mean there is no medical treatment requirement. 

Procedure and Preparation

The lab technician uses a sterile method to collect a fluid sample. For instance, an abdominal tap may be used to collect peritoneal fluid, whereas other bodily site-specific methods are used to collect other fluids.

The urea concentration is subsequently determined in the lab using the obtained sample. In most cases, there is no need for extra preparation before the test. Also, for a safer side, you need to inform your doctor regarding previous medical history or treatment.
