Urine, Glucose (Post Prandial) Test Overview

It is commonly said that ants are attracted to the urine of people who are diabetic. This is because excess blood sugar levels cause glucose to be expelled from the body with urine as well. The postprandial urine glucose test measures just that. It checks the amount of glucose that’s expelled from the body with urine as it can accurately inform doctors about potential health risks, including prediabetes and type 1 or 2 diabetes. The term post-prandial refers to after a meal. This ensures that the urine sample you provide doesn’t have to come from a period of fasting.

Why Is A Urine, Glucose (Post Prandial) Test Prescribed?

A postprandial urine glucose test is prescribed by doctors when they suspect you to have diabetes. This type of test can also sometimes be used by doctors to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, diabetes is the more common use of this test. In most cases, certain symptoms like increased thirst, excess hunger, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, or problems with your vision warrant doctors to prescribe a postprandial urine glucose test. Based on your postprandial urine sugar level, doctors can move forward with the diagnostic process. Unless the test results are highly abnormal, this test is not used to diagnose any medical condition conclusively.

Components of Urine, Glucose (Post Prandial) Test

The results of a postprandial urine glucose test are expressed as a level. The normal range of postprandial urine sugar levels can range between 0 to 15 mg/dL. For people without diabetes, the results can normally go as high as 140 mg/dL. For people with diabetes, a normal result can range up to 180 mg/dL. If the test results are beyond normal levels, it can indicate a higher risk of diabetes. The test results can also be used by doctors to monitor the efficacy of diabetes treatment in patients with the condition.

Procedure and Prerequisites

A postprandial urine glucose test is performed by storing a random urine sample in a container provided by Aster Labs. While there are no prerequisites specifically, patients are required to collect the urine sample at least two hours after a meal such as lunch or dinner.
