Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin belonging to the B complex vitamins. It helps in DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolisms. It is required for myelin synthesis and normal functioning of nervous system. It also plays a role in RBC synthesis and maturation of blood cells in the bone marrow.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency-
Elevated homocysteine and methylmalonic acid levels are considered more reliable indicators of vitamin B 12 deficiency. Holotranscobalamine (active B12) levels which measures the biologically active vitamin B12 is an additional test available to diagnose B12 deficiency.
Excessive exposure of sample to light may alter vitamin B12 values.
