Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody Test Overview

The anti thyroglobulin antibody test is used to monitor the levels of antithyroglobulin antibodies in your body. Thyroglobulin is a protein in the thyroid gland, which helps in the synthesising of thyroid hormone.

Due to the presence of autoimmune conditions, the immune system starts attacking the thyroid gland, which affects the thyroglobulin production in your body. The immune system creates anti thyroglobulin antibodies, which are measured using the anti thyroglobulin test.

As a blood test, the anti thyroglobulin antibody test can determine whether you have any autoimmune condition or not. Based on your test results, doctors can start management processes for the autoimmune condition as they are not curable.

When Is Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody Test Prescribed?

The anti thyroglobulin antibody test is prescribed to patients when doctors monitor symptoms of thyroid disorder. This includes symptoms like unexplained and sudden weight gain, fatigue and lethargy, dryness in your skin, and symptoms of constipation.

Apart from the symptoms mentioned, doctors can also prescribe the anti thyroglobulin test to diagnose other conditions that cause impaired function of the thyroid gland including:

● Hashimoto thyroiditis

● Goitre or an enlarged thyroid gland

● Grave’s disease

Components of An Anti-Thyroglobulin Antibody Test

The anti thyroglobulin antibody test results are usually presented as negative or positive. A negative test result ensures that you don’t have any anti thyroglobulin antibodies in your system, which negates the possibility of having autoimmune conditions.

For positive results, there are two possibilities. Low levels of anti thyroglobulin antibodies in your system can indicate other conditions like: type 1 diabetes, thyroid cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma, all of which are autoimmune conditions. Further testing is however required before these conditions can be definitively diagnosed.

If you have high levels of anti thyroglobulin antibodies in your system, it can indicate and even be used to diagnose serious autoimmune conditions like Grave’s disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Procedure And Prerequisites

The anti thyroglobulin antibody test is a blood test. The procedure for performing this diagnostic test involves drawing blood from the veins of the patient’s arm. The collected sample is then sent for testing. There are no special prerequisites that you need to follow for this test. Biotin or Vitamin B7 is water soluble vitamin of the B - complex. Biotin can interfere with Immunoassay tests. To mitigate potential interference, patients taking biotin doses >5,000 mcg should wait at least 8 hours after the biotin administration before a sample is taken.
